July 7, 2020
Grizz Gaming, the NBA 2K League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, lost 2-0 in a best-of-three series (58-66, 62-67) with Mavs Gaming (9-4) on Tuesday night. Grizz Gaming’s record now stands at 5-6.
A slow start spelled doom for the Grizz in Game 1, with the team scoring just eight points in the opening frame and trailing by 16 at the break. Memphis’ team was able to get back into the game after cutting the Mavs lead in half through the third quarter, but the Mavs held on in the fourth. G O O F Y 7 5 7 (Dayvon Curry) and Vandi (Zach Vandivier) led the Grizz by posting double doubles. G O O F Y 7 5 7 posted 20 points and 17 boards while Vandi recorded 16 points and 11 assists. Sherm (Justin Sherman) led the Mavs with 33 points.
The first half was a much tighter contest in Game 2, as the Grizz trailed by no more than two at the end of each period. The Mavs would push the lead to 51-45 after the third quarter, but Grizz Gaming pulled within 56-54 midway through the quarter. AuthenticAfrican (Mehyar Ahmed-Hassan) then tied the game up at 58-58 at the 1:56 mark with a steal and fastbreak dunk. Mavs Gaming scored the next four points to take a 62-58 lead in the final minute. However, Grizz Gaming cut the lead back to two and proceeded to steal the ball in the backcourt and call timeout with 13 seconds remaining. Out of the timeout, G O O F Y 7 5 7 took a dish from Vandi and tied the game with 7.5 seconds left. Mavs Gaming took the lead back with 4.8 seconds left before stealing the ball out of the inbounds and knocking down a three as time expired. Vandi added another double-double of 26 points and 10 assists. Sherm led the Mavs once again with 30 points.
Grizz Gaming returns to action this Thursday, July 9, at 8 p.m. against Blazer5 Gaming. Fans can tune in on the ESPN app as well as the NBA 2K League’s Twitch and YouTube channels. To view Grizz Gaming exclusively, access the “Command Center” on the league’s Twitch channel.
