September 5, 2018
In advance of the NBA 2K League Expansion Draft, Grizz Gaming has protected AuthenticAfrican and UniversalPhenom from being selected by one of the league’s new franchises (Atlanta, Brooklyn, LA Lakers, Minnesota).
“Grizz Gaming is excited to be able to protect Authentic African and Universal Phenom as we head into Season 2,” said Grizz Gaming General Manager Lang Whitaker. “They have each proven themselves to be valuable and versatile, and it feels good to have two building blocks in place going forward.”
AuthenticAfrican was selected in the second round (20th overall) of the NBA 2K League Draft. He finished fourth in the league out of 102 players in scoring (26.4 ppg) and seventh in assists (9.1 apg). Additionally, on July 27, he shattered the league’s scoring record by tallying 84 points in a triple-overtime thriller against 76ers GC.
UniversalPhenom was one of the team’s most consistent performers this season, scoring in double digits 15 times and recording four double-doubles while averaging 13.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
“I also want to thank all six players who made up our inaugural team,” said Whitaker. “They all willingly moved to Memphis and embraced the city, and the city embraced them back. I feel safe speaking for all them in saying the support we received from Memphis and the Mid-South region was one of the highlights of our first season.”
We'd like to announce that we have protected @AuthenticAfr and @UniversalPhe2K for the upcoming 2019 @NBA2KLeague season.#PressStart pic.twitter.com/m7VbefIQxB
