Grizz Gaming Season Rewind

The inaugural season for Grizz Gaming, NBA 2K League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, was filled with its share of memorable moments. From a massive state-of-the-art practice facility to memorable wins and free-fall from 15,000 feet, in just a few months Grizz Gaming created a life’s worth of memories for themselves and their fans.

ShatteredMehyar Ahmed-Hassan (AuthenticAfrican) shattered the league’s scoring record in an unbelievable performance. He broke the previous record of 54 with over three minutes to go in regulation, shooting 40-of-55 from the field in a 101-93 triple overtime loss.

Clutch Gene – Grizz Gaming had lost four straight with their backs against the wall in Week 5 against Warriors Gaming Squad. The team had blown an early 16-point lead and were trailing by 10 with just a couple minutes left. Grizz Gaming came storming back and Daniel Davis (DDouble2K) hit the game-winner from the right elbow with 1.9 seconds left.

Silencing the Critics – After registering an 0-4 showing in the NBA 2K League’s season-opening tournament, Grizz Gaming shocked everyone (except themselves) by opening the regular season with a 64-57 win over Pacers Gaming.

Streaking – Following a Week 7 win over Knicks Gaming, the team opened a Week 8 doubleheader with an impressive 73-63 win over Bucks Gaming (leading by as many as 27) to earn the franchise’s first winning streak.

Texas-sized revenge – The team’s opening weekend tournament blowout loss to Mavs Gaming was a major catalyst in the negative early season narrative against Grizz Gaming. In Week 9, Grizz Gaming got revenge with an 84-77 victory despite a 41-point, 9-assist and 7-rebound performance from the league’s No. 1 overall pick, Dimez.

Finish Strong – Grizz Gaming ended its inaugural season on a high note, defeating Heat Check Gaming 72-67 in the regular season finale despite 53 points from Hotshot.

The New Kids  – Grizz Gaming selected the first six gamers in franchise history in the inaugural NBA 2K League Draft. Point guard Larell Mitchell (Winner_Stayz_On), a Richmond, Va. native, became the first player in Grizz Gaming history when the team selected him 15th overall in the first round. The team also selected center Mehyar Ahmed-Hassan(AuthenticAfrican), who became the first international player drafted in the league’s history, in the second round (20th overall).

Showing Off – On June 18, Grizz Gaming unveiled the Grizz Gaming Command Center presented by America’s Navy, the team’s brand new, state-of-the-art practice facility. Tours of the Grizz Gaming Command Center were available to the media and multiple outlets showed up for a full experience of the facility and the opportunity to scrimmage the gamers.

New Friends – On Tuesday, July 24, 4 patients from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital paid a visit to the Grizz Gaming Command Center. The kids spent an hour chatting up with the team and even trying their luck against the squad in a game.

At Ease Sailor – On April 3, Grizz Gaming announced America’s Navy as its presenting partner. America’s Navy was aligned with Grizz Gaming immediately, starting with the inaugural NBA 2K League draft. The occasion itself saw to the establishment of the first ever Grizz Gaming Draft War Room, with Sailors on hand that call in select picks to the league. The partnership involves a comprehensive integration of America’s Navy within all aspects of the Grizz Gaming team identity, including digital content and featured brand placement on both the virtual jersey and team uniforms.

Free Fallin’ – In the later part of the season, Mehyar Ahmed-Hassan (AuthenticAfrican) and Daniel Davis (DDouble2K) made a special trip out to San Diego to join up with the Navy Leap Frogs. The duo went skydiving from 15,000 feet with assistance from the Naval unit, providing plenty of candid moments.
